Adam Young

Pro Dancer/Survivor

Adam Young, a native to Riverside, California was born in 1981 with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). At age 3 he watched a special on television about the ballet dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov and knew that that dance was what he was going to do for the rest of his life. Despite Adam’s physical handicap, he began dancing at age 6. By the age of 18 Mr. Young was dancing every day all over Southern California and had won many awards including the 1999 Music Center Spotlight Award for Modern Dance, the Kennedy Center’s Emerging Young Artist Award, and the Dancer of the Year Award which allowed him to dance, teach and perform in Australia.

Adam attended the University of California, Irvine on full scholarship and danced professionally with the Nashville Ballet for two seasons after graduation. By this point Adam had danced, taught, choreographed, trained, and performed internationally in such countries as France, Australia, Canada, etc.

Unfortunately by the age of 25, Adam’s CF had taken a heavy toll on his body and he soon had to stop dancing and began living on disability. Within 2 months of this retirement, Adam required oxygen to breathe at all times. He remained on oxygen for 7 years and sat on the double lung transplant list at UCLA for 2 years. On May 31 of 2013, Mr. Young received the call from UCLA and was given a double lung transplant. He no longer requires extra oxygen to breathe and his lung capacity has gone from 20% to 90%. After over a year since Adam Young’s transplant he is back to dancing and is currently working on a project about his life that will premiere in August of 2015. Adam will be telling his story of adversity and recounting his personal struggles and triumphs from his ongoing recovery from addiction and near death experiences to his return to the world of dance after an 8 year hiatus.
